A change of role

After the lv cap increase, it's getting more and more clear that SAM is no longer the best DD compare with other jobs. (Assuming the definition of "best DD" is based on parse result). It has something to do with how DD mechanics changed after the update.

Some of the reason why SAM parse high @ 75 cap is because the way this game calculates dmg just favors SAM @75, based on other ppl's opinion:

In 75 era:

1. Tachi:Gekko hits harder on IT+ mobs compare with other job's main WS.

2. Tachi:Gekko is 1 hit, which produces full dmg when mob almost die, while other DD's main WS are multi-hit and doesn't produce full dmg if mob almost die.

3. Hagun is a broken weapon which makes Tachi:Gekko broken. Other jobs has no broken weapon.

And obviously, things changed now. Now with the power of RR atma(which most DD has them now), 1h DD, h2h DD and DD with crit WS all gets stronger. NIN BLU MNK all MUCH stronger than it used to be, even THF is able to do some crazy dmg with RR atma. Crit rate+ also favors crit WS user, such as DRG. And those job used to be lolDDs in 75 era.

Outside of abby in old events, due to the lv difference, crit hit also proc more, so those jobs still gets the advantage. Also, Tachi:Gekko no longer gets bouns outside of abby event because mobs are no longer IT+. All the crit hit+ inside and outside of abby, and lv correction change certainly smash 2h DD and none-crit WS user hard.

Sadly, DRK doesn't get power up in this lv cap without crit WS(or to be precise, a useful one, according to Vodevil), even Apoc is no longer so godly due to getting to haste cap easier. Not to mention all the procing !!! in abby kills DRK zerging.

WAR is still top DD, DRG certainly has power up, I've seen some insane dmg of Drakesbane.

New lv cap update also favors BLU, which not just gets new spells, but also gets unlimited MP in abby, outside of abby all mobs are no longer IT+, and we all know that BLU hits hard on mobs that's VT or lower.

Melee DoT jobs like NIN MNK are all very powerful now, especially if they use crit WS.

SAM is dead. Goodbye, you've been top DD for a long time already.

  1. Atmas are still not commonplace to the point of where Samurai is absolutely dead. Not to mention they still maintain their niche role of skillchains.

Plus, the entire game isn't in Abyssea. Move outside of that, and the situation juggles back to where Samurai is still a proud contender.

We'll see where the final expansion takes atma and gear in Abyssea. I foresee most of the jobs finally attaining some semblance of balance--or at least each gaining their own unique role that even the player base can accept.

  2. Sadly, Skill chain is dmg, but it doesn't count as dmg deal by specific player when parsing I believe. It's still dmg, and certainly helps the pt in terms of overall dmg output, but it doesn't make SAM parse any higher.

I exaggerated a bit on the last part, SAM is not "dead", but it's just no longer on the top of the list because the way this game calculates parse dmg and atma no longer favors SAM like it used to. The top DDs in my Einherjar LS are usually WAR BLU MNK Apoc DRK, sometimes even DRG, SAM is rarely close to top. I know there are lots of stuff that affects parse result so it's not always accurate, but the difference is there ._.

  3. (Same guy as before)

I leveled SAM originally for Nyzul Isle because it was basically a requirement by my group then. "We need zerg damage on Floor 60/80/100 Bosses and your DRG can't do that."

Now I'm DRG in Abyssea with the same group because of the VV/RR. I also dual box a BLU to help with procs, so I mess around with Quadratic Continuum here and there for the hell of it.

I'm looking at SAM more as a return to their old HNM role--subbing THF and planting high damage weapon skill damage on the tank. Even going a step further and doing this to close a skillchain for further hate set. With Scars they certainly cannot keep up, but no telling what Heroes may bring.

As for Einherjar, I am unsure. Maybe your LS SAMs aren't quite up to par with the rest of the DDs?

Finally--the game itself doesn't parse any damage. :) It would take a slight bit of programming, as well as quite a bit more loop load, to handle calculating each skillchain with the players that were involved to handle damage. These programs usually just track skillchain damage individually since it's easier, as well as trying to determine who did what share of that damage is usually in shady territory.

  4. The mobs in Einherjar is no longer IT+, the crit-hit rate is determined by DEX v.s AGI. So if the player lv is close to the mob, crit-rate is still higher. Not to mentioned Gekko no longer outperform other WS because mobs no longer IT+. Also, sometimes skeleton pop, so MNKs do more dmg, sometimes bats pop, so DRG BLU do more dmg. SAM just lost it's advantage when parsing in such events. Gear wise, SAMs in my LS mostly have 1~2 pieces of AF3+1, at least have tiger pants. There are still exceptions(some SAM I know still parse high in their old events), and there are still many reason to affect parse result such as food/lag/etc. Outside of abby, SAM may not be a "bad" DD, just no longer get a huge advantage when competing against other DDs.
